9.1 Der bestimmte Artikel - the Definite Article

When you read a news story about that flagship having sunk off the coast of Ukraine, you know exactly which ship sank off which coast.

That's why in this news story you saw the definite articles, because we definitely know which ship and which coast we're talking about.

(Note that below, Ukraine is die Ukraine in German, and below it is called der because it's in the Genitive case and means "of the Ukraine". We will focus on that in a later lesson, simply go with it for now.)

Read this first sentence and note the underlined articles:

Am vergangenen Donnerstag ist das Flaggschiff der russischen Schwarzmeerflotte vor der Küste der Ukraine gesunken.
Last Thursday the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet sank off the coast of [the (German)] Ukraine.
