Theory

In German, negation words are the negative equivalents of several nouns and adverbs. We see this concept in English: “someone vs. no one; somewhere vs. nowhere; something vs. nothing.” The same opposite pairs exist in German.

– Hast du angerufen?
– Ja, aber es hat niemand geantwortet.
– Did you call?
– Yes, but no one answered.

– Hast du jemanden auf der Straße gesehen?
– Nee, ich habe niemanden gesehen.
– Did you see someone on the street?
– No, I didn’t see anyone.

– Was habt ihr heute Abend vor?
– Wir haben heute Abend nichts vor.
– We have nothing planned for tonight.
– What do you have planned for tonight?

II. Negation Words

The following are the most frequently seen negation words along with the affirmative counterparts.

Niemand (opposite of jemand)

Like jemand, niemand is inflected based on case:

Nominativ niemand
Akkusativ niemanden
Dativ niemandem
Genitiv niemands / niemandes

Da ich heute sehr beschäftigt bin, kann ich niemandem helfen.
Because I am very busy today, I can’t help anyone.

Am Wochenende ist niemand im Büro.
No one is in the office on the weekend.

Nichts (opposite of etwas)

Während des Meetings hat sie nichts gesagt.
She didn’t say anything during the meeting.

Das Kind ist sehr tapfer und fürchtet nichts.
The child is very brave and fears nothing.

Nie(mals) (opposite of manchmal/immer)

Nie is more commonly used; Niemals is used emphatically.

Ich bin noch nie in Salzburg gewesen.
I’ve never been to Salzburg.

Niemals wird sie dich lieben!
She will never love you!

Nirgendwo(hin) (opposite of irgendwo)

The hin is attached when there is direction or movement towards something.

Ich habe beschlossen, diesen Sommer nirgendwohin zu fahren.
I have decided not to go anywhere this summer.

Diese Blume gibt es nirgendwo anders auf der Welt.
This flower is found nowhere else on Earth.
