I. Theory

Adverbs of narration are used when telling a story or explaining the sequence of events within a story. While these adverbs will often be found in written texts, they can also be used, for the most part, in conversation.

Am Anfang hat die Firma ein Vermögen gemacht.
In the beginning, the firm was making a fortune.

Er spricht immer noch über seine Ex-Freundin.
He still talks about his ex-girlfriend.

II. Common Adverbs of Narration

This lesson will focus on the following commonly found adverbs: am Anfang, immer noch, danach, and am Ende.

Am Anfang

Am Anfang haben wir Deutsch und Englisch im Unterricht gesprochen.
At the beginning, we spoke German and English in class.

Die neue Frau meines Onkels war am Anfang sehr freundlich zu mir.
My uncle’s new wife was initially very friendly to me.

Immer noch

Ich telefoniere immer noch mit meinem Mitbewohner aus der Unizeit.
I still call my roommate from college.

Spielst du immer noch Fußball?
Do you still play soccer?

Danach

Wir waren im Kino, und danach haben wir im Restaurant gegessen.
We went to the movies and we ate at a restaurant afterwards.

Sie trank Tee und ging danach spazieren.
She drank tea and then went for a walk.

Am Ende

Wir haben unseren Flug am Ende abgesagt.
We cancelled our flight in the end.

Am Ende hat alles geklappt.
In the end, everything worked out.
