AA

I. Theory

Temporal adverbs are used to show the time at which an action has taken place, is taking place, or will take place. Examples of English temporal adverbs are: “now,” “immediately,” and “then.”

Jetzt können wir anfangen.
Now, we can begin.

Wir hatten damals kein Auto.
We didn’t have a car back then.

Ich rufe dich später an.
I will call you later.

II. Temporal Adverbs

This lesson will focus on four commonly used temporal adverbs (jetzt, damals, später, and dann). As temporal adverbs convey the time in which an action is completed, they often are found either at the beginning of the German sentence or before manner and place information.

Jetzt

Ich kann jetzt nicht reden, denn ich bin im Unterricht.
I can’t talk now as I am in class.

Sie ist in China geboren, aber wohnt jetzt in Deutschland.
She was born in China but now, she lives in Germany.

Damals

Weil es damals keine Handys gab, musste man eine Telefonzelle suchen.
Because no one had a cellphone back then, you had to find a payphone.

Ich bin damals mit dem Zug zur Arbeit gefahren, weil ich kein Auto hatte.
I took the train to work back then, because I didn’t have a car.

Später

Wenn es dir jetzt nicht passt, können wir später gehen.
If it’s not convenient for you now, we can go later.

Später habe ich einen Termin in der Stadt.
Later, I have an appointment in the city.

Dann

Die Kinder putzen sich die Zähne und gehen dann ins Bett.
The children brush their teeth and then go to bed.

Morgens mache ich Yoga und fahre dann zur Arbeit.
In the mornings, I do yoga and then drive to work.
