AA

I. Theory

German features a wide array of Latin-based verbs. These verbs tend to be recognizable to English speakers [ex: telefonieren (to talk on the phone), engagieren (to engage), arrangieren (to arrange)]. Generally, these verbs have a Germanic-based equivalent, however they often have at least a slight difference in meaning:

Telefonieren (to talk on the phone) vs. anrufen (to call)
Kapieren (to get, to understand - informal) vs. verstehen (to understand)
Informieren (to inform) vs. benachrichtigen (to notify)

II. Formation

As a reminder: -ieren verbs are fairly regular in terms of formation, with the exception of their past particle, which does not have the ge- prefix.
