I. Theory

Like in English, there are various verbs used to convey the action of learning in German. These nuances include finding out information, determining information, and learning information either by way of study or experience.

II. “To Learn” Verbs

Lernen

This verb translates most directly to “to learn” in English. It therefore has a wide range of uses.

Was hast du heute in der Schule gelernt?
What did you learn at school today?

Es ist nicht einfach, eine neue Sprache zu lernen.
It’s not easy learning a new language.

*Ich habe sehr viel für die Prüfung gelernt.
I studied a lot for the test.

*At times, lernen can also be translated as “to study.”

Erfahren

Can directly translate to “to experience” but also “to learn (by experience).” In some context, erfahren can mean “to find out.”

Beim Reisen kann man erfahren, wie andere Menschen leben.
By travelling, one can learn how others live.

Ich versuchte, mehr über die Geschichte des Dorfes zu erfahren.
I tried to find out more about the history of the village.

Sie liest Horoskope, um mehr über ihr Schicksal zu erfahren.
She reads horoscopes to learn more about her destiny.

Herausfinden

Generally means “to find out.” It can also mean “to figure out” (based on clues or context).

Ich fand heraus, dass er einen Heiratsantrag
machen wollte, denn ich hatte den Ring gesehen.
I figured out that he was going to propose,
because I had seen the ring.


Ohne Experimente können wir nicht
herausfinden, ob das Serum wirkt.
Without experimentation, we can’t
find out if the serum will work.


Wenn der Junge schlau ist, wird er
herausfinden, was wirklich passiert ist.
If the boy is clever, he will
figure out what actually happened.


Feststellen

This verb can mean “to learn” in the sense of “to determine” or “to realize.”

Die Polizei hat die Ursache für das Feuer nie feststellen können.
The police could never determine the cause of the fire.

Nach dem letzten Streit stellten sie fest,
dass sie sich scheiden lassen sollten.
After the last argument, they realized that
they should separate.


Das Computerprogramm stellte einen Virus fest.
The computer program determined that there was a virus.

Erkunden

Generally means “to explore” or “to get to know” in terms of a subject or area.

Am Wochenende möchte ich die Stadt erkunden.
This weekend, I would like to explore the city.

Das ist eine Möglichkeit, die unsere Firma erkunden sollte.
This is a possibility that our firm should explore.

Die Tiere sind vorsichtiger,
wenn sie eine neue Umgebung erkunden.
The animals are more cautious when
they are exploring a new environment.


Erforschen

Means “to research”, “to learn through research”, or “to investigate” in most instances.

Ein Team aus verschiedenen Wissenschaftlern
erforscht die Ruinen im Wald.
A team of several scientists
is researching the ruins in the forest.


Mein Professor erforscht hauptsächlich alte Sprachen.
My professor researches mainly ancient languages.

Ich erforsche die Geschichte des Schlosses.
I’m investigating the history of the castle.
