Limiting Adjectives

I. Theory

The limiting adjectives are 4 German adjectives that are used before singular nouns only. As these adjectives do not change based on case or gender, any adjectives that follow will take a strong ending.

Zum Abendessen trinke ich etwas Bier.
I drink some beer with dinner.

But

Zum Abendessen trinke ich etwas kaltes Bier.
I drink some cold beer with dinner.



Wir haben viel Zeit.
We have a lot of time.

II. Limiting Adjectives

German limiting adjectives include etwas, wenig, genug, and viel.

Etwas

Die Suppe schmeckt besser, wenn Sie etwas Salz hinzufügen.
The soup will taste better if you add some salt.

Ich gehe nach draußen, um etwas frische Luft zu schnappen.
I am going outside to get some fresh air.

Wenig

Ich habe während der Woche wenig Zeit zum Lesen.
During the week, I have little time to read.

Er hat seinen Traumjob gefunden: gute Bezahlung und wenig Stress.
He found his dream job: great pay and little stress.

Genug

Wir haben genug Platz, um die Party bei uns zu machen.
We have enough space to have the party at our place.

Sie hatte gerade genug Geld, um nach Europa zu fliegen.
She had just enough money to fly to Europe.

Viel

Meine Oma verbringt viel Zeit draußen.
My grandma spends a lot of time outside.

Für diesen Kuchen brauchst du nicht viel Zucker.
For this cake, you won’t need much sugar.
