Verbs that take Genitive Objects

I. Theory

In German, most verbs take either a direct (accusative) object or an indirect (dative) object. There are however, a handful of verbs that take a genitive object. It should be noted that verbs that take genitive objects are considered to be very formal and used only in the written language. Furthermore, the genitive only remains with these verbs in certain expressions (see * examples below).

II. Review of Genitive Declensions

To recap: the genitive is typically used to express possession or ownership. A more detailed overview of the genitive case is discussed in another lesson.

III. Verbs

As you can see from the verbs below, many of the translations include the preposition “of” - which often conveys possession in English. Genitive verbs include: sich rühmen, sich enthalten, sich vergewissern, beschuldigen, sich bemächtigen, as well as the verbs used in the examples below:

sich annehmen

Die Krankenschwester hat sich der Behandlung des Patienten angenommen.
The nurse saw to the treatment of the patient.

sich bedienen

Im Dschungel muss man sich eines Satellitentelefons bedienen, um einen Anruf zu tätigen.
In the jungle, one must use a satellite phone to place a call.

bedürfen

Wenn die Touristen Tschernobyl besuchen möchten, würden sie sicher eines Reiseleiters bedürfen.
If the tourists wish to visit Chernobyl, they would surely be in need of a guide.

gedenken

Am 4. Juli gedenken die USA des Jahrestages der Unabhängigkeitserklärung.
On the 4th of July, the US remembers anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

anklagen

Nachdem die Polizei ihn verhaftet hatte, wurde er des Diebstahls angeklagt.
After the police arrested him, he was charged with theft.

verdächtigen

Obwohl er ursprünglich des Mordes verdächtigt worden war, gab es nicht genügend Beweise, um ihn zu verurteilen.
Although he had originally been suspected of murder, there wasn’t enough evidence to convict him.

*sich (bester Gesundheit) erfreuen

Mein Opa erfreut sich noch bester Gesundheit.
My grandpa is still doing very well.

*sich (der guten Zeiten) erinnern

Bei einer Beerdigung ist es wichtig, sich der guten Zeiten zu erinnern.
At a funeral, it is important to remember the good ole days.
